Group aims to boost PTAs within CMS: Council says about one-third of schools' organizations need help.

Sep. 6--Almost a third of Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools need significant help to create strong PTAs, a parent leader said Wednesday as she prepared for Saturday's fall parent training.

The CMS PTA Council is evaluating the strength of each school's parent group, rating them on a scale from "high fliers" to "priority," said council president Kim Graham.

The ratings aren't finished, Graham said, but she estimated 30 percent have little effective parent involvement. The council looks at whether key officer positions are filled, finances are in order and principals believe the PTA is effective, among other measures.
