The six key points that have to be learned in addition to the skills
Over the past 15 years, the South Burlington H.S. tennis team has made the Division I state finals 14 times, won the championship 10 times (including the last seven in a row), and compiled an overall record of 212-17, for a .926 winning percentage.
The team's extraordinary success cannot be attributed to luck or the prodigality of its personnel year after year. It lies in a combination of carefully developed physical skills and a broad concept of "winning tennis."
Right from the beginning, we try to discourage our young players from simulating their favorite pro by pounding the ball or going to a tennis camp and working on a style that isn't really suited to their physical makeup.
I'm not saying that clinics and camps cannot help young players. But I do believe that few players have the tools that enable them to win on talent alone. Even great natural athletes take years to mature, and it is during this maturation period that "percentage tennis" becomes vital to success.
What exactly do we mean by percentage tennis?
