Sep. 4--Today marks the 50th anniversary of a historic day in Charlotte.
On the morning of Sept. 4, 1957, three black students integrated the city schools. Dorothy Counts went to Harding High; Gus Roberts went to Central High; and his sister Girvaud went to Piedmont Junior High. The next day, Delois Huntley became the fourth when she entered Alexander Graham Junior High.
Many white Charlotteans opposed integrated schools; at Harding, a crowd of students made life so rough for Dorothy that she left after four days in class.
They were days of hope, fear, confusion and courage.
