Sep. 2--As a former youth club soccer coach, Jon Mertes helped mold many of the current Lake Norman High players.

As an assistant coach last year, he roamed the sidelines in Cary as Lake Norman went undefeated and won the 3A state championship.

As the head coach this year, the expectations of a repeat performance fall on his shoulders.

"The expectations are much, much higher now," Mertes said. "With that comes some great challenges."
