Sep. 2--Three Charlotte-area businesses last week heeded the call to step forward and help the area's needier students.
Duke Energy, Carolinas HealthCare, and Bank of America donated thousands of pounds of school supplies and backpacks to students.
"All children, regardless of income level, start the school year with enthusiasm, an eagerness to learn," said Karen Calder, executive director of Classroom Central, which collects donated supplies and distributes them to low-income schools.
"But when children arrive at school without supplies, that excitement quickly disappears," she added. "These donations will make a big difference in students' lives."
