Sep. 1--The players were warmed up, the sellout crowd was in a frenzy and the band was booming away.

Then an announcement came over the public address system Friday evening -- a 20-minute lightning delay. Fans huddled under umbrellas or in their cars until about 8 p.m., when the game finally started.

But it was no good. The storms refused to pass and the inaugural football game at Merrill Gainer Field at Patriot Stadium was called off during the first quarter just before 9 p.m. Officials rescheduled the game for 1 p.m. Monday.

After years of discussion and $4.1 million, a few more days may have seemed a small…
