Aug. 31--Fifteen years after skipping out on a prison sentence in an obscure fraud case, a former Bay Area businessman returned to a Redwood City courtroom on Friday -- now transformed into a nationally recognized political pariah and a flashpoint in the presidential campaign as a result of a forgotten crime tucked away in an old court file.

Norman Hsu, a fugitive to state prosecutors since 1992 even as he amassed a fortune and doled out big dollars to Democratic politicians, turned himself in and appeared before a San Mateo County Superior Court judge to face the consequences for his 1991 felony grand theft conviction.
