As an engineer I am focussed on developing systems that function effectively, efficiently, and correctly. In the field of operations research, that usually means computer software and hardware that carry out calculations to simulate, optimize, or control complex systems. For this reason I have always viewed the interface between operations research and computer science as the real heart of our profession, the place where the rubber meets the road. It has long been my opinion that the INFORMS Journal on Computing (JOC) is the very best journal addressing topics at this crucial interface of operations research and computing. In fact, I own a copy of every issue published since inception. This view of the journal is independently verified: JOC ranked first out of 56 journals in the operations research and management sciences category on the ISI Impact Factor for 2005. The quality of the articles is extremely high and they are very relevant to practice. I find interesting articles to read in every issue.
For these reasons, I am tremendously proud to have been selected as the Editor-in-Chief for the INFORMS Journal on Computing, though sad that this opportunity came my way due to health issues for the family of former Editor-in-Chief Prakash Mirchandani. Prakash was able to put into motion some important initiatives for the journal before stepping down, and I will be continuing with those, such as moving to the Manuscript Central software for handling the ...
