Aug. 30--Newton-Conover Middle School's new school uniform policy debuted this week to teacher enthusiasm and student skepticism, with both groups finding that even if the clothes don't make the school, they sure can change it.
In the past, kids streamed through the doors in a rainbow of T-shirts and jeans, and, in some cases, baggy pants and skimpy tops.
But on Monday, the first day of school and of the uniform policy -- the only one of its kind in the Unifour -- students formed a sea of similarity, walking the halls in the only clothes allowed under the new rules: Logo-free red, navy blue and white polo and button-down shirts, with a sprinkling of royal blue polos, paired with plain black, khaki and navy shorts, pants and skirts.
Staff members were in the spirit, too, wearing aqua polo shirts with embroidered Newton-Conover Middle logos.
