Aug. 28--The babies of women who get diabetes while pregnant are almost twice as likely to become overweight or obese as young children, according to a study involving about 600 Clark County women.
The study, conducted at Kaiser Permanente health research centers in Portland and Hawaii, links high blood sugar during pregnancy to increased obesity rates in children from 5 to 7 years old.
The children of mothers who had very high blood sugar were 89 percent more likely to be overweight and 82 percent more likely to be obese than children of mothers who had normal blood sugar levels during pregnancy.
