   PLACE IN THE ROAD 
 
   I only just felt the body shiver through the car's frame: 
   a second's interruption, then that sorry, sick feeling. 
 
   How stupid it all seems. 
   They streak across the road-- 
   something I would never do. 
 
   And yet-- 
 
   I'd snatch a child from danger, 
   dash into the road, give my life for a child's. 
   Or for X over there, whom I hate. 
 
   I'd like to be free of the only thing I know. 
   Wouldn't you give up your life, too? 
   Wouldn't you want even a stranger to have it?
