Parades and fireworks and displays of national pride in India and Pakistan mark 60 years of independence for both countries. The Indian subcontinent might have been the jewel in the British crown, but by 1947 the British were too war-weary and demoralized to take further care of it. Officials and lawyers who often had little or no knowledge of the area drew lines on maps that were misconceived, though perhaps unavoidable in the circumstances.
