Aug. 27--New ninth-grader Alex Villasana was one of nearly 1 million students across the Houston region returning to school this morning, following the longest summer break in 15 years.
"I'm feeling kind of nervous because I don't know anybody," Villasana said as he walked onto the Lee High School campus in southwest Houston.
He and his new classmates arrived to find about a dozen live-oak trees along one side of the campus festooned with toilet paper. Students said the white tree decorations have become a tradition provided by the school's new seniors on opening day each year.
Villasana, 15, said he got up at 5 a.m. to prepare for his new life in high school.
