Aug. 26--The 25,000 Prince Hall Shriners did more than hold their annual convention and boost the local economy when they were in Charlotte last week.

They also lent a helping hand to a pair of Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.

Members of the Shriners donated nearly 1,500 backpacks to students at Walter G. Byers Elementary and Piedmont Open Middle schools. The backpacks also contained school supplies.

"This is something we do every year, in the city where we hold our convention," said Ralph Slaughter, of Baton Rouge, La. Slaughter, president of Southern University, is Imperial Potentate of the Shriners.
