Aug. 23--At 46, Netflix founder and chief executive Reed Hastings gives the impression of a happy warrior.
When he sat down with the Mercury News this week, he talked about the "excitement" of battling Blockbuster in the online DVD rental business and the "amazing" future for Web-based video that, far down the road, could supplant the 1 1/2 million discs Netflix ships each day.
Los Gatos-based Netflix suffered its first loss in total subscribers from the first to the second quarter this year -- losing 55,000 and declining to 6.74 million overall -- but reported large gains in net income and revenue. Hastings points to Netflix's Watch Now service, which streams movies on demand for viewing on PCs, as a sign of his company's technological evolution, He also dropped a teasing reference to "some whiz-bang stuff" it would say more about next year.
