Aug. 22--Their resume is impressive.
Six consecutive South-Central League boys soccer titles. Seven consecutive state playoff appearances, including a Final Four apperance in 2005. Two consecutive undefeated seasons that ended with playoff losses.
The Centennial High School boys soccer program has been a jaugernaut in recent years. And the pinnacle may be on the horizon.
Under head coach Jeff Sterling, who enters his second decade with the Bulldogs, Centennial has had its way with the S-CL in recent years. In fact, the Bulldogs have lost only twice and tied three times in the past six seasons in league play, posting a 79-2-3 record. The past two seasons, the Bulldogs haven't lost a league game, going 14-0. And they entered the Class 4A playoffs with an unbeaten, untied record on both occassions.
Both times, their season ended deep into the playoffs. This season, they are hoping for even better results -- namely a state championship.
With nearly its entire roster returning and the addition of three top-notch transfers, Sterling and the Bulldogs are aiming for higher ground.
Centennial reached the state quarterfinals a year ago only to drop a 1-0 overtime decision to Cheyenne Mountain, ending its season at 17-1. All but two players return from that team, giving Sterling an experienced, talented group to work with.
Add to that four of South's top players, including the reigning most valuable player in the league, and it could be state championship or bust for the Bulldogs.
Seniors Marcus Miera, Tony Garcia and Clint Read and junior Jason Engel have made the move to the North Side. Miera was second in the league in scoring a year ago with 20 goals and was the 2006 S-CL MVP.
