Client/server computing is best explained in terms of an analogy. The client side is similar to a general practitioner or doctor. The doctor meets the patient's needs and acts as the focal point for administering to the patient's health. When the doctor does not have the answer, he/she consults the appropriate specialist. Similarly, the client (desktop computer) in the client/server model provides all services at the local level and meets the general needs of the user.
