Ford driver Marcus Gronholm became the only driver to win the same World Rally Championship event seven times, after a victory at his native Rally Finland.
The win stretched Gronholm's championship lead to 13 points over Sebastien Loeb, while Ford leads Citroen by 40 in the manufacturers' standings. Mikko Hirvonen, Gronholm's teammate, finished second to underline Ford's domination of the all-gravel event on the debut of its 2007 Focus WRC. The team won 20 out of a possible 23 stages.
Three-time reigning champ Loeb finished third in his Citroen C4 WRC. He is banking on upcoming asphalt events-his favorite surface-to right his title hopes.
Gronholm's win came as the 39-year-old Finn debates whether to retire at the end of the season. He was world champ in 2000 and '02.
MONTREAL SHAKEUP
Grand-Am's inaugural event at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve lived up to expectations of a wild-card race. Max Angelelli drove his SunTrust Racing Daytona Prototype past series newcomer Antonio Garcia to halt Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing's dominance and reduce Ganassi driver Scott Pruett's championship lead to two points. In the Grand Touring race, Andy Lally and R.J. Valentine scored their fifth win in the last eight races to reduce Dirk Werner's points lead to just five.
Gainsco's Jon Fogarty led the prototype race early from the pole, battling with Angelelli's co-driver, Jan Magnussen. But an air-gun failure for Gainsco during its final tire change dropped the team to 10th. Cheever Racing's Garcia took the lead, followed by Angelelli, which set the stage for a battle. Angelelli came out on top with 26 laps remaining, giving SunTrust its second win of the season.
