Rock racing is bizarre. The idea combines negotiating obstacles and flat-out drag racing, with a sprinkling of Monster Garage thrown in. Custom-built buggies race over boulders you likely couldn't traverse with a rope and pitons.
Rock racing's roots lie in the arcane "sport'' of rock crawling. That's where low-slung, spider-like buggies creep up impossible grades and frequently come to rest on their lids. Now add a stopwatch to the mix and some spectators (who nap during rock crawling), and you have rock racin'!
You won't find big-name chassis makes as you would at other open-wheel series; these guys arm themselves with welders and build world-class shops on their own. Rusty Bray is a newcomer to the Xtreme Rock Racing Association scene, but he's taken the sport by storm and is poised to take top honors in the XRRA Eastern division.
