Aug. 16--A proposed ethanol plant near Newton has gained approval from the county planning commission.
Emerald City Ethanol's prototype plant isn't home free. It still faces a possible protest petition before it goes before Harvey County commissioners for final approval next month.
The Harvey County Regional Planning Commission voted 10-3 Tuesday night for a special-use permit for the plant, which will produce 40 million gallons of ethanol a year. It will be southwest of Newton near the county's old landfill.
