I disagree with Jay Nordlinger's suggestion in his piece "Taiwan's Two Dozen" (August 13) that, although Taiwan once "did not have a proper legislature," it does have one now.
As the BBC reports, "Taiwan's parliament, which is split between two major political factions, often descends into physical violence." In a recent clash in May, members of the Democratic Progressive Party approached the lectern of the speaker of the Legislative Yuan, Wang Jin-pyng, and prevented him from making a speech. Wang's fellow Kuomintang members came to his aid by attacking the DPP representatives. Video clips show a parliament in chaos where well-dressed politicians climbed on top of each other's shoulders to exchange blows.
