During a spell of unseasonably warm weather more typical of Arizona than western Sweden, residents of Trollhattan spruced up for more than 10,000 visitors from all over the world who came to take part in the celebration of the General Motors-owned automaker's 60th-anniversary weekend, June 7-10.
The riverfront town of nearly 54,000 residents hosted fans of the marque, who spent hours at the Saab Bilmuseum poring over everything from the original UR Saab, revealed to the world 60 years ago, to various historic and competition versions of the brand.
Attendees were able to see more than 800 historic vehicles belonging to fellow Saabophiles and also get track time at the Kinnekulle Ring club circuit an hour northeast of the city. After indulging in locally produced oxen burgers, Saab owners were given a precision-driving demonstration by the Saab Performance Team, which is made up of factory test and rally drivers. Then Saab managing director Jan-Ake Jonsson unveiled the company's 2008 9-3 BioPower line (see page 16), which, in addition to being E85-compatible, also has an available all-wheel-drive (XWD in Saab-speak) system and styling derived from the Aero-X concept introduced last year.
