FedEx Freight slashed its fuel surcharge by 25 percent for spot shipments in a move observers say will heat up a competitive LTL freight market as carriers expand their service reach into each other''s territory.

In addition, FedEx Freight''s long-haul LTL carrier FedEx National LTL will drop its fuel surcharge to FedEx Freight''s levels, the company said.

FedEx Freight, which had annual revenue of $4.5 billion in fiscal year 2007, called the fuel cuts a way to help its customers deal with rising fuel costs.
