Aug. 8--The Tucson Unified School District and Amphitheater Public Schools have teamed with a local nonprofit to launch a new drop-out prevention program that will pay students as much as $25 per week for going to school, officials said.
Known as the First Job Project, the stipend-based pilot will last three years and local officials say it will be the first of its kind in the nation.
The program will involve 100 juniors from Rincon High School and 75 juniors from Amphitheater High School, said TUSD Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer.
Students who begin the program this year will be paid for going to class during their senior year as well, he said.The…
