In the past decade, South Florida has emerged as a prime location for women who want to start and run their own businesses.

Among metropolitan areas, South Florida has the highest concentration of women-owned businesses on the East Coast, ranking below only Washington, D.C.

Nationally, the three counties that make up the region - Broward, Dade and Palm Beach - rank 14th, with 1,886 women-owned businesses per 100,000 residents, according to the most recent government statistics.

* Miami-Fort Lauderdale ranks 16th, with 1,821 women-owned businesses.
