Aug. 7--The Hamilton County school system has moved into the state's good graces. It achieved good standing under the federal No Child Left Behind law for the first time since 2003, school officials said Monday.
"We're making a very positive impact on the students in Hamilton County, and that's just tremendous," school Superintendent Jim Scales said at a news conference Monday. "We realize we can't slip back in any areas. We still have work to do."
Of Hamilton County's 75 schools, 65 met the state's benchmarks in reading, math, attendance and graduation rates last year. Of the 10 schools that did not meet the benchmarks, six of them are on the state's high-priority list.
Four other Southeast Tennessee schools made the high-priority list.
