Aug. 4--Authorities at the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department said a small plane crashed about 10:40 a.m. Friday in a soybean field in North Branch Township.
The pilot, Garth Newton , 51, of Memphis had minor injuries and refused medical treatment. Deputy Jerry Cypret said Newton reported engine trouble in his single-engine, hand-built plane shortly before crashing into trees at Tozer and Jones roads.
Newton had taken off from Dupont-Lapeer Airport in Lapeer and was headed to Midland. He was the only person aboard.
