Aug. 3--A Chowan County animal control officer who shot a dog Tuesday because it was a threat to traffic safety has lost his job.

On Tuesday, Jerome Purvis and Edenton police officers were called to what was thought to be an unoccupied house for a report of a dog running in the street. It was the same dog that Chowan County Animal Control had been unable to capture on Monday near the intersection of Virginia Road and Broad Street.

Purvis, the animal control officer, decided to "eliminate" the dog because it was a threat to traffic, uncatchable and unidentifiable because it was not wearing a collar, said Peter Rascoe, county…
