In snapping up Rough Trade for #800,000 last week, Beggars Group has surely secured itself a bargain. In an era when football clubs across the country are regularly snapped up by speculators with a few million quid in their pocket and the taste for a trophy acquisition, it is perhaps surprising that music assets do not attract similar interest. If they did, a label such as Rough Trade would be a prime candidate.
For the fraction of the cost of a lower-division football club, a smart investor could have taken a significant stake in one of the UK's most recognised and respected alternative music brands.
