Jul. 29--VISALIA -- A bulging Tulare County court system has officials hiring more attorneys and support staff to keep up with new judges being appointed to the bench.
The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to provide funding to hire three new attorneys each for the District Attorney and Public Defender offices. The board also voted to hire four support staff for the six new attorneys, along with creating three new probation officer positions.
The new positions were approved as the Tulare County court system is poised to grow by six judges during the next few years.
In a separate action, the board also approved plans to hire two new District Attorney's Office employees to be stationed at the Visalia Police Department headquarters, part of a pilot project that could spread to other departments if successful.
The number of cases handled by Tulare County courts has jumped as its population has grown.
"Our case numbers increased 25% last year," said Tulare County District Attorney Phil Cline.
