Jul. 24--WASHINGTON -- Famous for cows, cream puffs and catchy slogans, the Wisconsin State Fair was a favorite haunt for William Proxmire, the late U.S. senator from Wisconsin.

His handshaking with fairgoers during his 32 years in office, which ended in 1989, was nothing less than legendary.

"Prox" died at age 90 in 2005, but years of struggle from Alzheimer's disease meant he left the public stage much earlier.

The Democratic lawmaker is to be remembered at the State Fair on Aug. 8, during a 1 p.m. ceremony featuring family and friends as they launch a $1.5 million fund drive to enhance and make more accessible …
