IT SEEMS I AM a relic of an intellectual tradition that is now obsolete. Some years back I did a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Social Sciences and went on to do Honours in Philosophy. I'm now doing a doctorate in Sociology at the Carseldine campus of the Queensland University of Technology (slogan, "a university for the real world[R]"). Being an intellectual product of the "old" Social Sciences and Humanities, I understand that my Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Coaldrake, sees my type of study as likely to have poor employment outcomes and my research as likely to have little industry-linked funding possibilities.
