Jul. 20--Know of a really big tree? Aug. 1 is the deadline to nominate it for the state and national champion tree competitions.

The Michigan Big Tree Hunt list is compiled by Global ReLeaf of Michigan and the Michigan Botanical Club's Big Trees Project. When promising trees are nominated, experts go out to verify the measurements.

Among Michigan's national champs on the last list was a black willow in Grand Traverse County (76 feet tall, 400 inches in circumference).

Trees also may be entered in the nonprofit American Forests registry of national champs. That list comes out every two years, and Aug. 1 is the cutoff for …
