Jul. 18--SunRocket Inc., a Virginia-based provider of Internet-based telephone service, abruptly shut its doors on Monday, apparently leaving thousands of customers in dozens of states, including Rhode Island, without telephone service.
While SunRocket has not announced its closure, the privately held Internet phone company laid off its entire staff Monday and ended its relationship with an outside firm that was handling customer support, according to press accounts and postings on Internet forums by people who say they were SunRocket employees.
SunRocket's Web site was still online yesterday, but a call and e-mail message sent to the company's public relations department were not answered. SunRocket's toll-free support line played what sounded like a computer-generated message: "We are no longer taking…
