The day after the French Grand Prix, a story erupted that initially implied an impending F1 scandal of major proportions. A Ferrari statement suggested that the team's technical coordinator, Nigel Stepney, had given secret technical information to McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan.
In F1 circles, McLaren's involvement brought reactions of disbelief, for team boss Ron Dennis' integrity has always been a byword in the sport. Dennis immediately contacted both Jean Todt of Ferrari and FIA president Max Mosley, assuring them of McLaren's absolute willingness to cooperate with investigations. A complete inspection of a McLaren's MP4-22 car revealed not even the tiniest evidence that any of Ferrari's intellectual property was incorporated into its design. Nor is there any suggestion that anyone else at McLaren was implicated in any way.
Searches of both Stepney's property in Italy and Coughlan's in the United Kingdom allegedly turned up Ferrari documents in both places. Ferrari fired Stepney, while McLaren suspended Coughlan.
