Jul. 18--After leaving one of its shows, it becomes painfully obvious how perfectly named the band Tool is: The pounding of its live show makes your head feel like it went a few rounds with a jackhammer.

But the rabid sold-out crowd at the Sovereign Center Monday night didn't seem to mind.

Merging the complexity of 1970s progressive rock with the volume and thumping of latterday heavy metal, the quartet is one of the few today that can truly be called original.

So it's no surprise that its live show is like no other.
