Jul. 18--Music manipulation was on the agenda Tuesday at Derita Alternative School, as 250 students were told there's a link between tunes they listen to and the rising gang violence on Charlotte's streets.

Derita, a place for students who have been kicked out of other schools, is holding workshops this week in an attempt to reduce the strength of gangs in a city with a growing problem. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the number of gang members more than doubled between August 2005 and February 2007. Most are under age 22.
