Pearls 
 
   As a girl, I was given 
   a simple string of pearls, each 
   knotted in place and held 
   to my pulse 
   by a cunning silver clasp. 
 
   Because of the way that my hair curls 
   softly at the temple 
   and rises from the nape 
   I wore a pair 
   of single drop pearl earrings. 
 
   But such perfection hung heavily …
