Jul. 11--School officials in Berkeley and Charleston counties are letting parents know sooner than ever whether their children will be eligible to attend a higher performing school this year.
Students who are zoned to attend low-income and underachieving schools can transfer to another school under the federal No Child Left Behind law.
Berkeley parents received letters in May listing their options, and those who want to request a transfer must do so by Friday. This year's deadline is several weeks earlier than last year's. The state Department of Education released preliminary data about schools that would be required to offer choice ahead of schedule, and that enabled the earlier timetable, said Sheldon Etheridge, Berkeley's director of federal programs.
