When the Chevrolet Camaro returns to join the coming Dodge Challenger, three old rivals from the pony-car era (GM, Ford and Dodge) will compete again, but something important will be missing. Before V8 Pontiac Firebirds got huge birds painted on their hoods or were driven in campy Burt Reynolds movies or even goofier TV series, they were just plain fast. Usually a bit more plush, always a bit more expensive and, often, even faster than their Camaro cousins.
The slightly higher prices for Formulas and Trans Ams originally relegated them to guys with a little more jingle in their pockets and therefore a little older. At least until they started being resold and got into the hands of ever-younger owners and, eventually, the unbuttoned-shirt-with-gold-chain crowd that typified later Trans Am owners.
