Xrefer loses battle of pronunciation

Tracey Caldwell

Online reference services provider Xrefer has changed its name to Credo Reference to emphasise the quality of its resources rather the functionality of the service.

The company acknowledged that it was not immediately obvious how to pronounce the name Xrefer.

"Xrefer was frequently misspelled and almost always mispronounced," explained Jenny Walker, executive vice president of Credo Reference. "Some variations included 'Cross Refer', 'Ex-reefer', and 'Extra what?'!" It was not at all memorable and difficult to pass on by word of mouth."

She added: "Xrefer was placed at the end of an A-Z list on library websites. We see that for the foreseeable future libraries will organise their resources in this way."
