Jul. 9--You were warned two months ago: Air travel was going to be difficult this summer. The older legacy airlines have cut their flight schedules but the younger discounters have added service, netting an increase in air traffic. Passenger counts were projected to be higher.

Throw in an unusually large number of days with thunderstorms in multiple areas of the country, and you have the mess we've seen since early May. In fact, air travel has been more troublesome than normal since last winter in our region, with a couple of nasty ice storms and US Airways botching the switch to a new computer system. Summer just made it messier.

Experienced travelers know tricks…
