Jul. 8--Currituck County plans to start its first beaver trapping program, similar to one used in other counties that controls -- but doesn't stop -- the determined dam builders.

In the past few years, beaver dams have caused flooding on farms and in forests in Moyock, Barco, Shawboro and Harbinger. A beaver downed a tree last fall that fell across Short Cut Road and caused an accident, said Mike Doxey, district technician for the Albemarle (Currituck) Soil & Water Conservation District.

The county has budgeted $4,000 to pay trappers $35 per beaver in hopes of controlling the problem. Trappers can also make about $25 per pelt.…
