1884 -- The Joseon Dynasty signs a commerce treaty with Russia.

1933 -- A leper colony is established on Sorok Island, some 500 meters off the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula. The colony originated from a medical institution established by foreign missionaries who brought lepers there for treatment. The 4.42-square-kilometer island, named for its fawn-like shape, is now a tourist destination, favored for its sandy beaches and thick forest.

1950 -- The United Nations Command is established in South Korea, placing South Korean troops under its control. British forces join. The U.N. started to send troops shortly after the Korean War broke out on June 25 of that year. The war ended in 1953 with a cease fire, not a peace treaty, between North ...
