1884 -- The Joseon Dynasty signs a commerce treaty with Russia.
1933 -- A leper colony is established on Sorok Island, some 500 meters off the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula. The colony originated from a medical institution established by foreign missionaries who brought lepers there for treatment. The 4.42-square-kilometer island, named for its fawn-like shape, is now a tourist destination, favored for its sandy beaches and thick forest.
1950 -- The United Nations Command is established in South Korea, placing South Korean troops under its control. British forces join.
