THE MAIL ON SUNDAY'S PRINCE CD GIVEAWAY
Apparently, the pint-sized musician personally authorised The Mail on Sunday to give away his new album, Planet Earth, free with the paper on 15 July. Whether he did or didn't, it's a great coup for the MoS as the ten-track CD will not be sold in shops, and will only be available to ticket holders at Prince's concerts and in the MoS. It's a move the MoS is branding 'groundbreaking' and the 'most sensational CD giveaway of all time', and we think it's a very shrewd and brilliant piece of marketing.
UNCUT'S BOB DYLAN EXTRAVAGANZA
Keeping with the giveaway theme, Uncut magazine is giving its readers a swag of pressies to celebrate its tenth birthday. While it's not quite as sensational as an exclusive Prince CD, we like the fact that the music magazine knows its target market and has nailed the gifts perfectly. The anniversary special lauds a Bob Dylan extravaganza, complete with a 15-track Radio Bob CD and an 'A to Z' of all things Dylan. Uncut has also thrown in The Uncut Book of Revelations, a collection of rock facts that is bound to give music snobs and geeks hours of music trivia to argue over.
