Costly kart
Lewis Hamilton finally made a mistake. The F1 rookie sensation sold one of his racing karts for charity-and crashed it while demonstrating it to its new owner. The kart sold on eBay for $84,000 and was to have been handed over to the auction's winner in Brunswick Square in central London. Hamilton drove the kart around a narrow, makeshift course in front of 200 onlookers but clipped a barrier. The kart will be repaired before being delivered to its new owner.
New NASCAR name
For the third time since 2003-and the fifth time in its 60-year history-NASCAR's top series will get a new name next year. Expect Sprint/Nextel Inc. to drop the "Nextel Cup'' name and rebrand the series "Sprint Cup.''
Sprint and Nextel merged last year, leading to immediate talk about a name change. Nobody at NASCAR or Sprint/Nextel will comment on the speculation.
AT&T re-ups
Despite its looming legal battle with NASCAR over naming rights (Competition, June 25), AT&T extended its sponsorship contract with Richard Childress Racing through the 2010 Cup season. In turn, RCR extended its contract with driver Jeff Burton. AT&T has been with the Richard Childress-owned team since 2002, and Burton has been an RCR driver since the fall of 2004.
