Byline: CURT CAVIN
The Indy Racing League and its fans will remember June 24, 2007, for a long time, although Dario Franchitti's win might be lost to most.
Instead, memories of Iowa Speedway's first major event will include those of people standing three and four deep in the grandstands, with enough RVs parked on the backstretch to give the weekend a NASCAR-like feel. And the crashes were as plentiful as they were spectacular.
The Iowa Corn Indy 250 was so goofy that former IRL champion Dan Wheldon crashed on lap one, went to the garage for repairs, returned just before the race's midpoint and still finished in 11th place.
Observers will remember spins by the usually steady Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan, a six-car pinball crash and the return of Marco Andretti's oval touch.
"Wild, wasn't it?'' said Franchitti.
The 0.875-mile oval designed by Rusty Wallace seemed to have everything but outside amenities, though traffic flow was smooth off I-80.
