So many strong drivers put on so many great performances at Infineon Raceway at Sears Point that you could point to just about any of them as one of the season's best. But it came down to whose crew chief could figure out how much gas was in the other guy's tank.

Ultimately, Donnie Wingo-Juan Pablo Montoya's chief-turned out to be the best strategist/gambler. Montoya outlasted a host of race leaders to take his first Nextel Cup win in a career that is becoming as diverse as that of the great Mario Andretti.

Like Andretti, Montoya has now won in Formula One, in CART, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and in the world's premier stock-car series.

"It's as big [a win] as any of those, as big as the Indy 500,'' Montoya said. "I'm supposed to win in open-wheel. I'm not supposed to win here.''

Montoya led only seven laps of the 110-lap race, but they were the final seven. His win was all the more dramatic considering he qualified an abysmal 32nd.

"When [Wingo] told me the qualifying time on the radio, I thought he was joking,'' said Montoya of his Friday afternoon run, the last of the day on a cooling and supposedly quickening track. "Then I looked at the time sheet and said, `Man, we suck!'''
