Jun. 30--A record number of Texans could brave soggy conditions and high gasoline prices to take a trip to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.
Some 3.4 million Texans, slightly more than last year, are expected to hit the road during the coming week to enjoy the midweek holiday, says a spokesman for AAA Texas.
Most travelers -- an estimated 60 percent -- will leave by today. And a large majority, 86 percent, will drive despite gasoline prices that are 10 cents higher per gallon this year than last July 4.
"People see this holiday as an opportunity to take a couple of days off and enjoy a holiday," said Paul Flaningan, a spokesman for AAA Texas. "It's a time to explore destinations that are closer to home."
A midweek date for Independence Day has led some travelers to devise creative ways to celebrate.
Among them is Laura Jolly and her daughter, 2 1/2 -year-old Alyssa. On Friday afternoon, mom and daughter were at Houston Hobby Airport catching a Southwest Airlines flight to Harlingen. They planned to spend the weekend at Jolly's parents' home on South Padre Island.
