Jun. 28--Catawba County property owners will get higher tax bills next year after county commissioners voted in a 9 percent tax rate increase Tuesday.
As expected, commissioners rejected County Manager Tom Lundy's original proposal of a 17 percent rate increase, having indicated earlier that such a change would overburden strapped taxpayers.
The new rate of 53.5 cents per $100 of valuation takes effect July 1, up from 49 cents. That raises taxes on a $150,000 home from $735 per year to $802.50. The increase comes in a year that property values rose due to a countywide property revaluation, creating a double-whammy effect.…
